The Stadthaus is committed to the presentation of contemporary art, photography and contemporary music in exhibitions and other events. Particular emphasis is given to the themes of architecture, nature and the shaping of our environment and to encouraging young artists and performers of all kinds.
The Stadthaus hall is a “forum” for the inhabitants of Ulm and is a popular and much-used meeting place in business, science and industry.
Architecture by Richard Meier
At the foot of the famous cathedral, and forming both a contrast and a complement to this dominating late-Gothic building, the Stadthaus and the cathedral square were designed by the renowned American architect, Richard Meier. Winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, he received worldwide acclaim when the Getty Center opened in Los Angeles at the end of 1997.
The design of the Ulm cathedral square has been the subject of heated argument for 105 years. Finally, in 1986, Richard Meier’s design was chosen. This decision provoked discussion and led to meetings throughout the whole town, organised as well as spontaneous, private as well as public.
In November 1993, the Stadthaus was opened.
The Stadthaus is one of a series of important and highly visible European commissions undertaken by Richard Meier and include the headquarters of Canal Plus in Paris (1992), The Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (1995), the Frankfurt Museum of Decorative Arts (1985) or The Hague City Hall and CentralLibrary in The Netherlands (1995). To commemorate the beginning of the 3rd Millenium, the Vatican asked him to build a new church on the outskirts of Rome (Jubilee Church, 2003).
